Moving Image

Elise May's Screen Dance Lab

Video Artist

Elise uses moving images in her choreographic work as a means to communicate themes and concepts that support her choreography. Drawing on visual arts installation and video art as a medium, she has shaped video and film content for most of her major choreographic works. Consequently capturing, editing and projection of video has become part of her ongoing choreographic practice.

Elise’s Dance Works for Screen

“Memory Files.mpeg”  Originally created as the scenographic backdrop to a self-devised solo (titled swanstyles.mpeg 2002), this piece of video work evolved into a stand-alone 9-minute short film that was screened in the Institute of Modern Art screening room in Brisbane in 2007.

“International Collaborations” A 3-part documentary project (in progress) documenting Expressions Dance Company’s three major international collaborations in China, Switzerland and Singapore between 2010 – 2013.

Multimedia Video/Visual Installation Works

“Elise May’s Screen Dance Laboratory” Elise was selected for a Brisbane Front Residency Judith Wright Centre in 2009, supported by Ausdance Qld, The Judith Wright Centre and Brisbane City Council. Elise facilitated a laboratory style experimental project where the performance artists were given free reign to consider and explore the central role of video in creating a combined visual and performative vocabulary. The project interrogated the role and use of video as an integrated component of the performance/installation design.

“Close Proximity” solo performance installation combined visual arts and design elements as well as the projection of still and video images, sound and costume. The work explored the human/female body in relationship with it’s audience. The video and installation components framed the performance by objectifying the body and magnifying it’s physical closeness or proximity with it’s audience. The audience became witness, observer, participant and voyeur. Elise performed this work twice in 2009, once in the Judith Wright Centre Shopfront venue as part of the Ausdance ‘Bell Tower II’ series and later  in the Brisbane Festival 2009 Under the Radar Program.
